Lake District Hiking - Wainwrights - Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Tarn Crag, Gibson Knott, and Helm Crag

Lake District Hiking Wainwrights - On the 13th of February 2025, I embarked on a hike in the Lake District, covering the Wainwright fells of Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Tarn Crag, Gibson Knott, and Helm Crag. This journey offered a blend of challenging ascents, serene landscapes, and panoramic views, making it a memorable experience.

Steel Fell

Steel Fell stands at 1,814 feet (553 metres) and is situated between Thirlmere and Grasmere. This fell is known for its triangular shape, with ridges extending north, west, and southeast. Alfred Wainwright described Steel Fell as having "smooth lines and graceful curves" highlighting its aesthetic appeal. The ascent from Grasmere via the southeast ridge provides a steady climb with views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.

Calf Crag

Calf Crag is 1,762 feet (537 metres) and is located on the eastern side of the High Raise massif. This broad-topped ridge is bounded by Wythburndale to the north and Far Easedale to the south. Wainwright noted that Calf Crag offers "a fine vista of the lake of Grasmere with the Helvellyn range rising behind." The summit features a rocky knoll with a cairn.

Tarn Crag

Tarn Crag, standing at 1,801 feet (549 metres), is situated to the east of Grasmere, overlooking Easedale Tarn. The fell is characterized by its rocky outcrops and steep slopes. Wainwright described Tarn Crag as "a rugged height overlooking the serene Easedale Tarn."

Gibson Knott

At 1,385 feet (422 metres), Gibson Knott is an intermediate height on the ridge between Greenburn and Far Easedale. This fell is part of the ridge that extends from Calf Crag to Helm Crag. Wainwright mentioned that Gibson Knott provides "an all-round view, although perhaps not as expansive as might be expected from the centre of the District." The summit features rocky knolls, and the route along the ridge offers a delightful walk with varied terrain.

Helm Crag

Helm Crag, though modest in height at 1,329 feet (405 metres), is one of the most recognized hills in the Lake District. Located to the north of Grasmere, its distinctive summit rocks have earned it names like "Howitzer." Wainwright praised Helm Crag, stating, "The virtues of Helm Crag have not been lauded enough. It gives an exhilarating little climb." The ascent from Grasmere is relatively short but steep, leading to a summit that offers commanding views of the surrounding area.
