Elie Chain Walk: A Coastal Adventure Starting at Kincraig Point.
Elie Chain Walk, an exhilarating coastal route along Scotland’s Fife coast, is a place I visited on the 23rd of June 2024. Known for its striking cliff views and challenging terrain, the walk was funand the scenery amazing. Starting at Kincraig Point, I experienced firsthand the thrill of climbing and traversing with the help of the embedded chains—a unique adventure along Scotland’s rugged coast.
About Elie Chain Walk: Location and Uniqueness.
Located in Fife’s East Neuk, the Chain Walk is set within a picturesque nature reserve known for its varied landscape and coastal charm. The path runs alongside the Firth of Forth. What makes the Chain Walk particularly unique is its series of iron chains, embedded into the cliffs, which allow you to cross the cliffs in ways most coastal walks do not offer. The route blends natural splendour with an air of rugged challenge.
History of the Chain Walk
Originally, the chain Walk served a practical purpose, aiding local fishermen in reaching difficult parts of the coast. It provided access to fishing grounds along the cliffs, and for years, the chains were solely functional. Over time, however, the path’s reputation grew, drawing those intrigued by its coastal challenges. It evolved into a unique outdoor attraction, drawing in locals and tourists eager for a distinctive adventure.
Number of Chains on the Route
The Chain Walk comprises eight distinct chains strategically positioned along its length. Each chain assists in navigating different sections, adding both support and security over the steeper cliffs and ledges. The chains vary in length and positioning, responding to the particular demands of each section of the walk. Some are embedded vertically, allowing for a safe ascent, while others stretch horizontally, providing handholds over narrow paths and steep drops.
Each chain has been carefully installed to ensure that the adventurous spirit of the route remains intact without compromising safety. While challenging, they make the walk accessible in a safe and controlled manner.

WWII Gun Battery at Kincraig
In addition to the walk itself, Kincraig Point offers a piece of wartime history. A WWII gun battery remains here, providing a fascinating reminder of the area’s past. These remnants serve as a quiet tribute to those who stood on these cliffs for a different reason.
The battery is partially intact, with its concrete foundations and remaining structures lending historical depth to the natural setting. It stands as a silent witness to history, contrasting with the lively, adventurous spirit of the chain walk itself.
