Derwent Water - Castlehead - Ashness Bridge - Surprise View

Derwent Water, Castlehead, Friar's Crag, Ashness Bridge, and Surprise View

On 25 November 2024, I explored the stunning landscapes around Derwent Water in the Lake District. My day included visits to Castlehead Viewpoint, Friar's Crag, the historic Ashness Bridge, and the iconic Surprise View.

Derwent Water

Derwent Water, often called the “Queen of the Lakes,” is one of the most picturesque lakes in the Lake District and is looked after by the National Trust. It is about 3 miles (4.8 km) long, roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, and reaches a depth of about 72 feet (22 metres). It's surrounded by forests and dramatic fells, making it a favourite among hikers and photographers.

Alfred Wainwright, the renowned fell walker once wrote, "Derwentwater is a place of spellbinding beauty, where every shore holds a different charm." His words perfectly capture the essence of this lake.

Castlehead

castlehead

Castlehead is a small hill located just south of Derwent Water, it offers spectacular views of Derwent Water and is 525 feet (160 metres) high. The short yet steep walk to the summit rewards visitors with sweeping views of Derwent Water, the surrounding fells, and the distant peaks of Skiddaw and Blencathra.

Wainwright praised Castlehead for its accessibility, describing it as "a small effort with immense rewards."

The views from the top of Castlehead are amazing even on a cloudy day.

Friar's Crag

Friars Crag

Friar's Crag lies on the bank of Derwent water, along the lakeshore. This peaceful spot is steeped in history and natural charm. The crag is most famously associated with John Ruskin, a leading figure in art and social criticism. Ruskin described his first view from Friar's Crag as one that shaped his love for nature.

Wainwright referred to Friar’s Crag as "a place of quiet contemplation, where the soul finds rest amid the wonders of creation." No visit to Derwent Water is complete without taking the stroll to Friars Crag.

Ashness Bridge
Ashness Bridge Lake District

Ashness Bridge is an old packhorse bridge and is located on the narrow road leading to Watendlath. It sits in an idyllic position with the surrounding fells in the background. Its charm lies in its simplicity and its ability to evoke a sense of timelessness.

Wainwright celebrated the bridge’s photogenic quality, calling it "a scene that captures the heart of the Lake District in a single glance." It remains one of the most photographed locations in the region, and for good reason.

Surprise View

Located just above Ashness Bridge, Surprise View offers an unparalleled view of Derwent Water and the Borrowdale Valley. Standing at the viewpoint, you can see all of Derwent Water and also Bassenthwaite Lake and the fells in the background.

Wainwright aptly remarked, "Surprise View is aptly named, for it surprises even those familiar with the area with its grandeur." If you plan on visiting Derwent Water, then Surprise view is a must visit.
